That first post is a really interesting experience. (And terrifying. It sure would have freaked me the fuck out.)

This sounds really odd too... if you had fae or some kind of spirits living there, and the tree is now destroyed... it seems unlikely the two are unrelated. I suppose it could have been natural events that forced the fairies out, or it could have been something more paranormal. I don't know enough about these things to say, though I wish I did!
