A thought, inspired by a discussion going on over at the_slash_pile right now...

I'm also not going to break up those huge paragraphs. Instead I am going to trust in the saint of formatting and hope that they just look enormous in the post textbox and will look more reasonable once actually posted. EDIT: I am, however, going to put a cut, because apparently the saint of formatting has forsaken me.

Just a friendly reminder to all those white 'Americans' out there who rail so hard against undocumented immigrants...

Most Mexican people have a hundred times more claim to the land you built your country on than you do.

I am so beyond giving a fuck about the supposed economic issues that immigration causes. I am so through with white governments using 'economics' as a reason to decimate and ruin other people.

On economics as an area of study...it serves two purposes. Neither of them is accurately predicting the future. The purposes are to study and understand the movement of resources within and between empires, and to operate as a political smokescreen. Remember this any time a politician says to you, 'we need to do this for economic reasons'. Remember that we kept slavery for as long as we did because abolition would 'economically destabilize the South'. Remember that the government is giving more and more land over to oil companies to tear apart in the name of economics. Remember that white-run economies are falling like dominoes right now, and white governments are actively turning down mitigating solutions because they'd rather risk economic collapse than release a bit of the resources their countries have hoarded, remember that they can do this because they will be fine whatever happens because the white men who run most Western countries are sitting on piles of money that their ancestors made on the backs and blood of other people, through the slave trade and war profiteering and stealing land to lay waste to it.

Remember that, and give any plan to 'bolster the economy' a real critical look, and see who it really helps, and who it really hurts, and ask yourself, what is 'the economy' here? Is it the system that includes everyone, or is it just the scaffolding that upholds 'job creators'?

My Autism and Me

A wonderful BBC video directed by an autistic girl, on autism. THE BEST WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THE SUBJECT

This is fucking fantastic and she is so adorable

Personally, I can identify with all these kids - I empathize with inanimate objects the exact same way I do with people (like if I bump a piece of furniture into another piece...I'll feel second-hand pain the same way I would if I saw someone get hit); I've had some pretty major meltdowns because I was trying to play a game but didn't understand the rules (I mean seriously this is the easiest way to piss me off/upset me in less than a minute); and I actually plan on having as much vertical space as possible in my future home because multiple levels of living space in one room would just be the most fantastic thing omg. And little caves and shit. And close ALL THE DOORS OMG my brain itches when they're open.

eclectic post

MY NEW BINDER ARRIVED TODAY WOOOOOO omg lol it's so much tighter than my old one...but still wearable...which is awesome. Although getting it on and off is a liiiittle bit of a struggle lol but the velcro makes it easier.

Also I got new Sherlock shirts ahhhhh

ALSO...I have the house to myself this weekend, just me and Tripper and the cat although she keeps mostly to herself...I am taking advantage of this situation for NAKED BAKING TIME. Yesterday I made some dough with my shirt off. Today I will bake it, probably in just my boxers because the oven will heat the kitchen up.

Not sure I'll be able to get proper photos of these cookies though because MY PARENTS TOOK MY CAMERA ON THEIR TRIP. WITHOUT ASKING.

Whatever. I'll see if I can get good pics out of dad's camera. These cookies will either be fantastic or weird-looking and either way y'all will want pictures I'm sure.

Also, just as a general statement, if you claim to be a trans* ally and then use 'trans' as a noun, as in calling me 'a trans', I'm going to have some significant doubts about your allyhood. I didn't even know anybody did that except radfems and certain conservatives until recently.
(ESL people exempted from this skepticism of course. God I can't imagine what kinds of terrible shit I would say if I tried to talk about issues of privilege in German)

ETA also I anticipate problems now that I can bind properly again. I 'pass' about 25-50% of the time if I'm binding well and I've been tossed out of the women's room before, but I can't use the men's room because there are people on campus who know me.

The Common Privilege in its Natural Habitat

I've been hearing a lot of "this is why people don't take X movement seriously!" lately. So let's talk some feels about this concept and how it's actually about privilege.

I guess I should cut this )

(Sorry if this was less coherent than usual. I accidentally my eloquence. Or possibly never had any)

ihu body

[livejournal.com profile] outdatedclocks has pointed out that my lower-back/hip problems, and my leg problems, are probably all related to the issues I have with my feet (lack of arches?). I've been making do with CVS-brand arch support pads, but they're not really enough, and I'd like to be able to do some cardio and upper-body stuff again, which I can't really now since my back hurts alllll the time. I'd been putting off talking to my doctor about it because of my terrible experiences with my last one...even though this one's shown no indication she's suddenly going to go all 'you're lying, you must be sneaking nachos in the middle of the night, fatty' on me. In fact, she'll probably be happy to help me out, since she wants me exercising before I go on T since I have a genetic disposition towards hypertension (dad's been hospitalized for it).

BTW, for those curious about the whole doctor saga, since I've posted it around a few places but not actually here at my main journal I think (since I just realized last night [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom had never read the whole thing)...I submitted the whole thing to First, Do No Harm (excellent blog BTW) so you can read it here (it's so long I don't see a need to copy+paste it here P:)

Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom, we might be hanging out this weekend :D or rather, probably are. I am still working out the logistics, I think I'll stay on campus this weekend and take the train into the city. It would mean missing a therapy appointment, but I've skipped weeks in the past (or rather, therapist has cancelled on me) so I know it won't do any damage emotionally or to my comfort level with him.

Okay I really should go to class 6 u 9;;

Totems

This is mostly for my own sake as a reminder to me of what my totems are, but am making it public because I know at least Paige will be interested in them.

For reference I use a natural time/action elemental system rather than...the usual one. They fit within a larger system that Corey and I discovered and that is difficult to describe all in one go. So um, if it doesn't make sense, sorry :c

Also keep in mind that I don't use generic definitions for totems, these are how I personally relate to the animal. There are also animals that I recognize as 'related' (although not necessarily biologically).

Avatar Thingies

So [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom linked me to this, and I disappeared into it for a couple of hours.

Results )

I'll probably resize a few and use them as icons for [livejournal.com profile] owlofowls since I don't have any icons over there yet.

I have a sewing post to do as well, but have to okay it with Paige first anyway so I'll give you guys a break and wait until tomorrow to do that P: and you'd better bet there'll be a baking post this weekend, too. I'm not trying any new recipes so it'll mostly just be photos showing off my cookie decorating skillz.

BTW, I would like it to be known at this time that there are WAY TOO MANY FUCKING SPIDERS IN THIS HOUSE.

General Life Update

Econ club is awesome. I am awesome.

Right now watching MushiShi (Mushi-Shi?) and sewing my Ditto. Taking a break from Baccano! because I have this inability to watch less than like, three anime at the same time.

This weekend baking some of these because apparently Martin-aus-Deutschland moechte Erdnussbutter gern.

I want to bake cookies next weekend for Paige and Derek to bring to their friends at school but my plans will pretty much be contingent on whether or not I can find rice flour anywhere. Or any non-wheat flour. Currently I am thinking Trader Joe's because they usually have like...things. And no, I cannot find any at the supermarket, kflajgdsalmldsmga, any suggestions?

I also plan to make sugar cookies for the family, I think I'll make a batch of sugar cookie dough and divide it in half, mix half with foodcoloring to test cookies-con-foodcoloring and do the other half up all fancy with some sprinkled Vanillinzucker and/or cinnamon sugar. And maybe add some pumpkin spice? Hmmm.

Also, I had kind of been assuming y'all knew BoA already but maybe...not? SO HERE

LJ Nooooo

I've had access to LJ pretty much the whole time...not counting a few hours yesterday when it kept repeatedly signing me out. It's nice to see other people filtering back in.

Having seen my dad handle a massive DDOS on a website that his people manage for a company (I don't think I can really say who or why, I should probably not even know that it happened lol) I have a lot more sympathy for the LJ people.

I know I promised y'all a post on trans men and male privilege, and I was all gonna write it last night and everything, but then I was exhausted. Sorryyy~ better to wait until LJ is functioning properly anyways, I think.

Acronyms

Ahaha. The college's GLBTA recently put up fliers around public areas that read, for example, '86% of BSU students know the 'G' in GLBTA stands for 'gay'. Did you?' and they have one for every letter in the acronym.

Apparently, '12% of BSU students know the 'A' in GLBTA stands for 'allies'.

Hmm, I wonder what else people might think that A stands for...? No, no, wait, allies are definitely more important.

Segueing!!!!! into a related topic.

I, honestly, don't like the long/typical acronyms at all. TBH I feel that an acronym that actually includes all identities would be fairly long...and probably change frequently. And there's the fact that T, if it gets in there at all, is such an umbrella term that I feel it's weird to expound into all the varieties of queer when there's an umbrella term for that. Although I do understand people can be uncomfortable with the word queer since it is still used hatefully.

I also, honestly, hear the acronyms used more often by bigots than slurs. This is probably because I'm in a more 'liberal' area, so modern bigotry is more common here, meaning non-overt bigotry. Basically, if somebody uses the term 'LGBTQ people(s)' I can expect that whatever they say next will be, at best, very patronizing.

So, what WOULD be a good way to label such things? No, really, I'm asking, because I'm really not sure. I like QSA, but obviously if the focus is on queer people, not trans etc. people. There's also the problem that asexual people who are hetero- or aromantic may not ID as queer. I also kind of like QTI (queer/trans/intersex) but it suffers from the same problem as the last one, and probably others I'm not seeing. TBH terms I favor the most are ones that don't try to name everybody, like Rainbow Guild or Dragon Alliance (okay, I made the last one up, but it seems like a good way to inspire respect right? Stop harassing us or we'll tell our dragons to fucking EAT YOU). Discuss?
