Also, considering alternatives to the terms 'homophobia' and 'transphobia'. I'm just getting sick of people going 'but it's a phobia, you can't blame someone for a phobia!!!' and I'm pretty sure the terms started that way to fuel the Gay/Trans Panic defenses and to differentiate it from "real" bigotry.

There's fear at the root of most bigotry. But it's the hatred that's the problem. So, maybe that's what we should focus on. It's just a thought though, I'd like other opinions.

I think "homo-hatred" and "trans-hatred" are much more fitting, but that's only if you're a nit-picky bastard (because, fucking seriously. How often do people actually use the term "transphobia" to mean an irrational fear. NO. They use it to mean hating on them. Colloquial vs. Vernacular definition.) People just use that approach as a way to validate shitty behavior.

I want one of these for interpreters! I'd make one, but I'd probably get fired! xD

I agree, this isn't fear, this is hate. It's hate caused by ignorance and fear of people being different. (And I will NOT quote Yoda in those damn prequels.)

How I confront people displaying hate is to ask, "How does this hurt YOU?" I also say, "I believe in Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If this makes people happy and doesn't hurt anyone, I support their right to do it."

I actually talked to my friend's little brother about this last week. He was against gay marriage because gays can't reproduce. I said, "Not everyone wants kids. Should we tell the people that don't want children they can't marry? Also, m grandfather remarried at 78. He's not about to have children with his new wife, who's his age. Should his marriage be dis-allowed?"

This is entirely true, and they would find other ways if we found better words, I suppose. And I have heard people try to defend their fear of other races, etc, so it wouldn't stop the 'but you can't illegitamize my feeeearrsss' whining, in the end.

You get to use a race phobia as an explanation only if you're actually working on overcoming it. Otherwise, you're still an asshole. And I say this from previously having a race phobia because of trauma history stuff. I don't get to be a judgmental asshole because I have a trauma history, and who wants to live like that anyway??

So yes, you can totally illegitimize phobias for things like that because, regardless of reason, you're still being a bigot because you're invested in staying phobic of a group of people.
