Oh, I got to see the doctor about my leg today!
He was kind of a jerk, but I was kind of expecting that, honestly. Although I was expecting more fatphobia than him lecturing me on not having gone to the doctor right away and explaining to me how to get to the campus health center like I'm five and a nice condescending 'you're 21 now, we expect you to take care of these things'. Who the hell is 'we' and why do 'we' have any right to expect anything from me, again? Aren't you a professional I'm paying to look at my leg? Where does you having the right to expect any kind of behavior from me come in there?
But yeah...other than that it went alright. He's convinced it's related to my lower back pain. Which I'm not going to say is impossible...I was intending to have that looked at, as well, but he went ahead and took x-rays of it right then and there, lol. But neither I nor dad think it's back-related. It definitely feels like something in the leg is tearing, not the kind of shooting pain I associate with when my back is really acting up. But he's going to send me for an MRI, I didn't even have to fight for that (those of you who aren't familiar with my last big health debacle might not know why I would expect to...too lazy to explain ATM, sorry) so we'll see. I'm also getting physical therapy twice a week, which will be...interesting to manage with school...and will also mean I'm having three set appointments every week, which will make my schedule pretty inflexible for things like group projects. Nerr...
Oh, and I spoke to the woman at the front desk at the office all by myself :DDD she was a bit mean (why are they always so mean if you don't know something?! I KNOW YOU KNOW ALL OF THIS, THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S YOUR JOB. I'M JUST A PATIENT MFKmfssdfksl) but we got it sorted out and the other woman was much nicer when I had to go run and get the co-pay from dad lol ;n; I'm still not sure how I'm meant to manage stuff like this without one of my parents though, who else is going to know my great-aunt's relevant medical history?
Also, dad was shocked that I still weighed the same (no, dad, I haven't gained weight since a month ago, WTF) and that my blood pressure was good. Sometimes I forget just how much he thinks I lie to him about, although I'm pretty confused about how mom and dad are both so incredibly convinced that I've been gaining weight.
But yeah my leg already feels quite a bit better, even though all he did was...manhandle it basically, which is not what I think led to it feeling better, LOL, although he probably did stretch it a fair bit. I was pretty much expecting to feel less pain after this visit...for those of you who want a short neuropsych lesson, here's why:
Pain does not occur in the body; pain occurs in the brain. Just like all other sensations. It does stem from messages coming from the body (as a general rule that is often broken), but the actual sensation of pain is not some annoying thing that your body does because it can't control itself; it's your brain's way of alerting you to a problem, and giving you impetus to FIX that problem.
So, for this reason, it's really common for pain from an injury or illness to decrease in intensity once plans are made to address the problem. You know you're doing something to fix your body - so your brain stops pressing so hard for you to do so. (This is why chronic pain can be difficult to manage, but also what makes it manageable at all. Although there have been no studies in the US or to my knowledge any western/white-dominated country about this, practices in other cultures suggest it's very possible to entirely or almost entirely be rid of pain - chronic or otherwise - without the aid of drugs, with a great deal of psychological work)
I was gonna say 'now I'll end this entry with the song I used lyrics from for my journal header, because I am an oldschool LJer and you cannot keep me from using lyrics in my journal header'
But then I realized that I used lyrics from Be Calm for my LJ, and lyrics from Benson Hedges for my TUMBLR not my LJ
BUT I WANT TO POST BENSON HEDGES
So that's what I'm gonna do

Date: 2012-08-28 02:07 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you're doing something about your leg and I hope it feels better soon!
I had to deal with fatphobia at the mall this weekend ughhh. "No we don't carry that size." It's not like I'm asking for a size 300 (which isn't real, lololol). I'm asking for the most common size in America, you ass.
I hate people. :D
