Yeah, auras are not like skin at all. They're more like a whole limb - can be used for attack or defense, but still fleshy and delicious to many predators. And there is only more aura under an aura; most of it is outside the body, but it permeates throughout as well. I think people who make the infection analogy have seen the results of an aura being chewed at and concluded the damage happened because the aura was gone, rather than a hole in the aura being part of the damage.
