Lure Faerie Saga Continued!

Last entry was not nearly as long as I was afraid it was. Yay! I'm glad I split it up though, it would have been huuuuge.
So in the last one I ended with Paige mentioning having found the body...a bit more about that. She found it in a neighbor's yard (she works for him doing yardwork, she doesn't just wander the neighborhood, lol) but didn't see it until she was practically stepping on it. It also didn't seem like anybody else saw it who was in the yard with her...the fact that it was still there the next morning indicates that that was probably true, since the guy wasn't the sort to just let a bird corpse lay around on his perfectly tended lawn. Also, when Paige went back to get it, she had to circle the area several times before she could find it again...she said it looked like a flower pot changed into the bird when she got close enough.
So at this point, I'm pretty sure the faerie has killed this bird and taken its voice (and probably its shape as well). Luckily, this is a pretty well-documented faerie behavior - vampirism, essentially. The pattern is this: The victim (animal or human, but obviously human victims are the most well-documented) dies of apparent illness, with no symptoms besides weakness, and sometimes fever and delirium. Later, they apparently return to lure other victims close to be fed on.
This is, obviously, only one source of vampire lore, so since I was going to be using vampire prevention techniques on the bird's corpse (might as well, since we had it - as
outdatedclocks mentioned on my entry at the time, this wouldn't have stopped the faerie from killing another bird, so it wouldn't take care of the situation altogether) I had to be sure to separate ones that would work on faeries from ones that were meant to work on other kinds of 'vampires' (most notably, 'vampires' that were actually rabies victims - a lot of public consciousness vampire repulsion techniques, like garlic and sunlight, was probably based on people with rabies).
I ended up cobbling together the basics - burial in an established place for the dead (although not consecrated ground, because I wasn't going to take the bird to a church cemetery - we buried it in our pet cemetery in the backyard) with funeral rites, which were performed by Paige in a wiccan style because the funeral rites I do would take faaar too long and would involve dissecting the bird. I then added some specifics from the roma/traveler traditions for vampire prevention, mostly because they tend to use things I can easily find and I trust their cultural good sense. Thus the coins in the 'coffin' (I think it was a shoebox? I didn't supervise Paige in this, just gave her her instructions and trusted her to take care of it) and the needle through the bird's heart. Ideally the coins would have been lain on various parts of its body, but...that's pretty difficult to do, with a bird.
So we laid the bird to rest, and then started in on the ward
outdatedclocks instructed me on. I needed help with that because I have absolutely no herbal knowledge regarding faeries (nor does Paige, although I'm sure she has wiccan-related herbal knowledge, she's very competent in that area, her funeral rites were spectacular BTW). Basically, the only ways I know to ward against faeries involve a lot of iron - those of you who have seen me advising people around
ontdcreepy have probably heard me mention driving nails into the ground in really dire situations. This is a pretty harsh method though, kind of like spraying your whole yard with caustic pesticides to get rid of a small beehive on your property, and I'd prefer not to make the area entirely uninhabitable to faeries. Because studying them is kind of an important part of my life, and because I can't ethically go around destroying anything's natural habitat.
So I knew something herbal would probably be more what I was looking for, and
outdatedclocks would probably have something for me on that end, which she did. So I constructed four bags, each containing one nail, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and St. John's wort. Paige was able to procure the three herbs fresh, which was surprising to me - we've never had much of an herb garden, but I guess Paige is working on one? We used to only have a load of mint that had taken over a back garden. Anyways, she found the St. John's wort in pill form at CVS (it's an herbal remedy for mild depression, apparently it's been clinically found to be effective); I twisted open the pills to get the dried herb out. Once the bags were finished (I constructed them of a durable but not too heavy fabric, basically just folded up/twisted the corners and sloppily sewed the top shut) I paced the perimeter of the yard and placed the bags roughly in the four corners of the yard. I say roughly because our yard is a strange shape, and there was one bag I would have liked to place further on but it would have just been in the middle of the grass and likely would have been spotted by parents and tossed out/moved.
Paige was asking me about the purpose of the various things in the bags, so I guess I'll explain them here. The oregano, parsley, and rosemary, I'm really not sure of,
outdatedclocks would be able to explain best. St. John's wort, also known as 'chase-devil', is basically good for...chasing off faeries. Nails are for the iron; they're one of the best forms to use against faeries because there's also some symbolism to them (as they often mark the perimeter of human territory by being used in the construction of the walls of houses).
So yeah, that's what happened. Since I thought you guys might be curious. I'm still not exactly sure why it targeted me or what would have happened if I had gone outside, but generally faeries don't try to lure people outside for friendly conversations, I think.

Date: 2012-05-30 09:17 pm (UTC)You explained the iron and st johns wort and ew you think st johns wort smells good ick ick ick. It makes me vomit and gives me hives and smells like butts. But I am also allergic to surgical steel so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Possibly I am devil to be chased away.
But oregano, parsley & rosemary. Other than like they are delish and you could make some stuffing as well with that.
Oregano has ~protective and good luck qualities, you're supposed to plant it outside for protection. Also good eating.
Parsley I picked just for you, in ancient times it was associated w/ death. Now it's got a laundry list of shit because parsley is well. Parsley. Goes with everything, yr basic green herb, boil some potatoes add butter and parsley you got a meal. But here, for purification & protection.
Rosemary, again protection but furthermore, remembrance to before the ward went into play & the iron and st johns wart was around.
But in case you were wondering I did a similar ward to this & boxed in one of the nasty fey in the nature reserve for a month bc it skurred me and I was buttmad.
Yes.
I warded in a fey into it's place of power.
Next time I went for a walk it got me lost for an hour then I said it was an asshole.
I think we're frenz now. idek

Date: 2012-05-31 02:15 am (UTC)That sounds incredibly stressful holy crap. I hope your faerie!repellent bags work :-/ How long do they have to stay there / how long until you know they've worked?
Also I thought that cats were supposed to be inherent evil repellers?? But it doesn't sound like I want to test out that theory because jfc. Poor bird :(

Date: 2012-05-31 03:01 am (UTC)IDK if I would call cats inherent evil repellers, but they are a natural enemy of faeries...that doesn't mean they'll always survive encounters with them, though. My observation is that in general they're about equally likely as the faerie to come out on top in a scrap...so both would prefer to back off rather than risk a confrontation. A cat is definitely good to have around if you're concerned about faeries because of that, and because they can naturally see through faerie glamours (Paige was prepared to ask Nikka to help her find the bird corpse the next morning if she couldn't find it) and aren't easily fooled by hypnotic luring noises, etc.
IDK IF I AM MAKING ANY SENSE. The massive library of faerie information in my brain sometimes makes it difficult to put information down xDDDDD I got all irritable with Paige when she asked what the nails were for because of that. PEOPLE EXPECT ME TO EXPLAIN THINGS?!
