Mar. 26th, 2013 07:08 pmI just spent a lot of time trying to find somewhere to buy Chinese market Pringles and/or Lay's Stax online. Nothing doing I guess ;n; I really want the finger-lickin' pork and BBQ steak flavors again ughhh so tastyyyy
So instead this is a post in celebration of all the awesome food I had in China. With photos!

Orange and lemon popsicle! (Also what the shit, Chrome? Popsicle is definitely a word.) Also, me looking like a tourist! And with my old bag! That never came home with me, I bought a new one there and threw my old one away on the spot.

Some Chinese-label Lay's Stax. Original flavor, before I got adventurous. The cookies were a bit more of an adventure because the English on the box was...not really understandable. It pretty much just gave what I assume was the brand name, and the weight of the box. Anyways, they were pretty tasty. The white ones were ice cream flavor - vanilla with something in them that kind of numbed your mouth to simulate it being cold. The brown ones were peanut butter, obviously, but rather than being like the kind of peanut butter you get in Nutter Butters and other cookie sandwiches, it was more like what you would find in peanut butter crackers. The chocolate filling was very creamy.

Fucking delicious breakfast at one of the hotels we stayed at. It was continental/buffet style, this is pretty much what I had every day. Cucumbers in a lightly vinegary sauce, plain milk dumplings (the white things at the back with the cucumbers), a dense cakey sort of bread (on the left) and fried dough fried in peanut oil (center). The bread on the right wasn't very good. I also got...what I think someone told me was chopped lotus root? a few times. It was in a similar dressing/sauce as the cucumber. It was all very tasty.

I took a photo to prove I cleared my tray every day, since that never happens at home, even when I'm eating food that I like.

Chinese Fanta. (It had the label in English on the other side of the bottle.) And Sprite, but that wasn't mine :P the Fanta is much tastier in non-US markets. I'm not sure WTF the American Fanta suppliers are doing.

Mall food! Yes, it was a fast food place with proper dishes. They had bussers to collect them, too. Anyways, the food was chicken and some veggies (mostly different kinds of onions) over white rice. And mango and peach juice. Food was actually the only thing we bought at that mall - it was one of the 'modern' malls, which only sold overpriced American and European brands basically, so we were just looking around. All of our actual purchases were in traditional malls (more like indoor marketplaces).

From our second visit to the grocery near our hotel. I ended up buying a ton of cookies, kind of unintentionally. I remember them all being pretty good, except for the ones in the blue box on the left - those were kind of ugh. My absolute favorites were actually the ones right below those, in the shiny gold package. They were actually crackers, not cookies - three crackers sandwiched together with two flavors (thus the 3+2 label), in that case one vanilla filling and one coffee filling. I also got some chocolate and vanilla 3+2s as you can see below those, but the coffee ones were epically delicious.
In the upper right are some different flavors of instant noodles. They were all really fucking tasty. And the drinks in the upper left are actually not Fanta, but rather Mirinda, which is a bit sweeter and IIRC had a little bit of a mango flavor to it on top of the orange.
Just as a note, that whole purchase cost only about $10. That's how cheap the snacks were, which is how I could end up buying ten varieties of cookies without really realizing.

Eating one of the cups of instant noodles. SO DELICIOUS. This was the first time I made them on my own, and also my first time using an electric kettle, so it was kind of an adventure, LOL.
The little package on the left is the dried veggies. I never used them because they didn't add much and some are bitter-tasting. The flavoring isn't dry, by the way, it's a paste that you squeeze in.

The place that sold fried just-about-everything. Those chicken nuggets there (center of the bottom row) were flavored with cinnamon sugar, which was extremely unexpected.

Shrimp dumplings. The only thing I remember not liking there. The texture was a lot like imitation crab like you would get in a crab cake.

CRAWFISH. Or rather, the remains of crawfish, because I was too excited about eating them to get photos beforehand.

Fried rice! From the same meal as the crawfish. ALSO DELICIOUS.

Okay, I didn't eat any of these. The were eggs in a grocery store we stopped at. They were just in a bin, unfrigerated. My guess is that means that they're pretty fresh.

These were in a bin next to them. Individually wrapped hardboiled eggs.
And yes, I do regret not having taken a picture of EVERY SINGLE MEAL I ATE. Because they were all so tasty.
If they lift the strict internet laws, I will probably try and move there. As it is now, not only does it annoy me too much, but I would have a very difficult time doing my freelancing work so I don't know how I would earn a living.
