YES I USED THIS ICON THREE POSTS IN A ROW

U CAN DEAL, halloween is exciting 6 u 9

Anyways I baked some sugar cookies! Using this recipe as always, with the addition of some food coloring to make the cookies orange!

Yup. )

So yeah, that's it for Halloween weekend. A week late, but I did not care, clearly.
potato_head: (halloween)
Okay I guess this isn't really baking??? This is just chocolate-melting. We used some molds (these ones mostly) and just piped in different colors of candy melts and some milk chocolate. And we didn't do it very well either. But it is tasty stuff so I figured I'd take some pics anyway?!

P.S. I would like to point out that I picked out the plate these are on like, last weekend. Isn't it super cool?! It was cheap and relatively elegant for a plastic Halloween plate I thought. It was dad's idea to set the chocolates all up on it, though.

More under here! )

I'll be baking the cookies sometime soon. Also, got my costume all together to hand out candy tomorrow, and will probably get some pics of that.

SO I WAS SO SUPER BUMMED YOU GUYS BECAUSE THE SNOW RUINED HALLOWEEN

BUT THEN I WAS TEXTING DAD AND THEY FINALLY GOT POWER BACK AT HOME SO I WAS LIKE 'OKAY I AM GOING TO BAKE HALLOWEEN GOODS THIS WEEKEND WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT'

AND THEN DAD INFORMED ME THAT SINCE THE TOWN WAS BASICALLY SHUT DOWN ON MONDAY THEY MOVED TRICK-OR-TREAT TO THIS SATURDAY

not only did I not miss weekend-before-Halloween baking and making a costume for Tripper, I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO MISS TRICK-OR-TREAT

I GET TO TERRIFY KIDS THIS YEAR

YES YES YES

P.S. IS THIS A NOSEBLEED OF EXCITEMENT?

Oh wait, no, it is just a nosebleed of cold air. Fuck you, cold air.

Alright, here's the things I baked last night!

FOLLOW ME )

For next weekend, I'm making some sugar cookies with icing and some boxed gluten-free cookies because I STILL CAN'T FIND RICE FLOUR ANYWHERE. I'm also putting cinnamon all over everything because omg cinnamon forever and ever

Econ club is awesome. I am awesome.

Right now watching MushiShi (Mushi-Shi?) and sewing my Ditto. Taking a break from Baccano! because I have this inability to watch less than like, three anime at the same time.

This weekend baking some of these because apparently Martin-aus-Deutschland moechte Erdnussbutter gern.

I want to bake cookies next weekend for Paige and Derek to bring to their friends at school but my plans will pretty much be contingent on whether or not I can find rice flour anywhere. Or any non-wheat flour. Currently I am thinking Trader Joe's because they usually have like...things. And no, I cannot find any at the supermarket, kflajgdsalmldsmga, any suggestions?

I also plan to make sugar cookies for the family, I think I'll make a batch of sugar cookie dough and divide it in half, mix half with foodcoloring to test cookies-con-foodcoloring and do the other half up all fancy with some sprinkled Vanillinzucker and/or cinnamon sugar. And maybe add some pumpkin spice? Hmmm.

Also, I had kind of been assuming y'all knew BoA already but maybe...not? SO HERE

Today has been stellar o u o

Dad found some cookie ideas that he wants to try out this Christmas. I've got the go-ahead to buy some of those small-sized cookie cutters that I wasn't intending to get, for the purpose of sandwich-style cookies; we also went to the dollar store and got some nice canning jars to make our own baking gift jars - those jars filled with all the dry ingredients of a recipe so the person only has to add wet ingredients and bake :3 I have to dig up some good recipes to put in those because the magazine he got them from had only some gross weight watchers recipes. At first he was all 'but these come with the recipes right here so we just have to copy this to put with it!' and then I gave him a long look and then he was like '...that's something my mother would do, isn't it.'

YES, YES IT IS. This is not the 60's, if I am sending people a recipe in a jar I am typing up the instructions myself thnx.

Anyways, we'll be doing some stained glass cookies and some sugar cookies with food coloring and other things. It's kind of cute to see dad get all excited about a recipe in a magazine and I just look at it and go 'that's sugar cookies with food coloring in.'

He is more of an ideas guy than a critical thinking guy xD

Also, am super thrilled b/c Dad is finally listening to me on things regarding Tripper. He's even asking me how I handle things, because it is becoming unignorable that my methods actually work. He's even including a bit of raw food into his diet c: pleased.

I BAKED EVERYTHING

TRIPPER IS A COOKIE NOW

JK Tripper is fine and sleeping. I just baked everything else

More coherent baking post this way )

I definitely recommend this recipe, it is delicious and so easy c: if you've made any kind of sugar cookie, or really any butter-and-sugar based cookie ever, you should be able to handle this just fine. It definitely takes less time than sugar cookies and most other recipes this delicious. You can also put a lot of different things in this cookie. Although I would recommend caution with nuts as the cookie is already very sweet and has a fair bit of taste of its own due to the malt powder; so I think it would easily overpower less sweet add-ins. If you are not a big chocolate/candy/peanut butter fan, perhaps dried fruit? o u o

SO remember how I said last post that I got to have the room to myself tonight?

My roommate's closet started...misbehaving. Every time I looked away I swear to god it was opening more. In small increments.

IT'S OPEN AGAIN A BIT FURTHER THAN IT WAS LAST NIGHT

Anyways I also thought I was hearing noises. So basically I freaked out, stayed up to 6 AM and slept restlessly with all the lights on and strange dreams.

In the end, I think probably roommate's mirror hanging on the inside of the door is somehow moving it veeeeerry slooooowly and the noises were almost definitely coming from my creaky old floor fan. But I'm super paranoid about these rooms after my experiences in my dorm room last year :c

Anyways in less pathetic news ummmm...I finally figured out how to use a gameboy emulator!

I guess this news is actually not at all less pathetic.

Anyways I downloaded one and also the ROMs for a few of the original pokemon games. Plus some harvest moon game I have not played before.

I finally get to play Yellow properly 6 u 9 (we lost the hard copy after I had only gotten past the first gym). If anybody has suggestions for games I should try to find the ROMs for, go ahead? I LOVE MONSTER GAMES. I'm already intending to have a look for those tele...whatever games, the ones that kept getting bootleg translated and sold as 'pokemon jade' and 'pokemon black' back before there was a real Pokemon Black. I hear there is a ROM out now of the Pokemon Jade version.

Doing some baking tonight per Paige's request. She wants to feed her sectional. Still have a lot of shortening I think, so will probably make snickerdoodles and some sugar cookies. Does shortening go bad...?

Maybe I'll also make some nutella brownies. I haven't made those in awhile.

BAKING PLANS

For this weekend? and maybe next weekend. There is a wedding or some nonsense I have to attend on Saturday. Not sure if we bring food, if so will bake for that.

Anyways these things:

-more things dipped in chocolate. Okay this is not really baking but I am still SO EXCITED about the little double-boiler dad bought at Joanne's on my suggestion. I love when I mention something that would be good to have and he wanders off an hour later and finds it because he agrees. We did strawberries and pretzels and bananas in chocolate, this weekend goal is EVERYTHING ELSE EVER

-that brownie recipe from um...[livejournal.com profile] legrotesque I THINK THAT IS RIGHT will check later. the guy from [livejournal.com profile] ontdcreepy. also because I now have double-boiler. He never gave me the full recipe but I think I can totally figure it out from what he told me.

-INSPIRED BY [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom: a sugar cookie-cake (cake-cookie? GIANT COOKIE) with sugar icing on top, then sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. THIS WILL BE THE BEST THING. maybe a touch of lemon in the cookiecake. Or perhaps a separate one with a touch of lemon.

I think we are probably not expected to bring anything to the wedding. Our family does catered weddings usually. That means don't bring food, right? :C

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FEED THEM IF THEY BUY FOOD FOR THEMSELVES

GOSH

But it's alright, these are basically test batches for the loads of food I will bring to Thanksgiving Dinner. LOADING EVERYBODY UP

Omfg wait a second what about like, a pumpkin spice cookie-cake with icing+the cinnamon sugar?!

That's right, right? I am like 90% sure cinnamon goes in 'pumpkin spice' things. It's part of the 'spice' right? With some other gingerbready stuff like nutmeg and cloves?

...Is there molasses? Is it basically just gingerbread with pumpkin?! IS THERE EVEN PUMPKIN INVOLVED

MAYBE I WILL JUST MAKE A GINGERBREAD COOKIE CAKE

And I do know it is silly to ask you these things when I can just like look this up

But like...that's boring

OKAY BYE HAVE CLASSES TOMORROW gawd you guys trying to keep me up sheeshhh

j/k you know I love u all <333 6 u 9

ETA I have an Iron Man band-aid around my toe r/n. Super pleased with myself (don't worry toe is fine, there was an evil blister)

Yaaay! Chocolate chip and butterscotch cookies!

I used this recipe, but substituted half a cup of butterscotch chips for the cup of chopped walnuts. They came out pretty tasty :D the butterscotch chips are a bit sweet for my taste, though. I think in the future I'll substitute chopped hazelnuts instead.

PHOTOS )

I really want an apron. Like one I can use at home while baking, my work one doesn't count, it smells like coffee >:c Aprons seem really simple to sew, so I think that might be my first foray into sewing clothing-type things...but I'll need some new fabrics for it. ;A;

New icon! 8D it's Ash with Charmander's face.

Anyways, I'm baking some chocolate chip cookies today. This recipe here.

Why did it take so much searching to find a good, regular chocolate chip cookie recipe on allrecipes? O.o;

Anyways, I think I might substitute the 1 cup chopped walnuts for more chocolate chips, OR chips of another flavor. Either peanut butter or butterscotch. I figure 1 cup chips is more...overwhelming than 1 cup walnuts, so I am going to cut it to 1/2 cup. Or maybe just add to taste?

Also, one of the comments on the recipe recommends adding some cream of tartar to get a nice cracking on top. I'm trying to decide if I want to do this or not. Hmmm.

Other than that...ummmm...been playing Pokemon a bit again. Mostly just 'polishing my collection' on my Ueberspielen (my HeartGold game, which may be the first cartridge I actually get level 100 pokemon on - currently my team is around level 78 - and complete the national dex on). By which I mean, just grinding to evolve pokemon to complete my pokedex. I currently have 325 pokemon obtained, and am pretty darn impressed with myself :D I also want to note that I faced Red many levels ago - around like level 60-something? - and beat him much more easily than I anticipated.

I bet you all would love a run-down on my team, right? RIGHT?

I AM A POKEMON MASTER )
potato_head: (o u o)
MY COOKIE CUTTERS HAVE ARRIVEDDDDD SO EXCITED I took them all out of the box to look at them even though I knew I would have to put them all back in again xD

Anyways I didn't take any pics because I think I'll wait until I get their permanent home and move them from the shipping box to there. IDK when I'll have a chance to do that though, I guess on Monday when I go out supply shopping for the baking I'm going to do, we'll stop by Joanne's or maybe just like Wal*mart and get a tub with some sort of dividers.

In other baking news, I'm starting to think maybe I should just make my own vanilla sugar, because it's very hard to come by but it's so tasty! GDI America why can't you pay attention to the awesome things they do in Germany, STOCK MY VANILLA SUGAR JDSKJFLDFG

So then I was thinking, well, I could probably also make my own cinnamon sugar, but there's not so much point to that since it's easily found in stores. Maybe it would be cheaper? Taste fresher? Probably, to both. So maybe I will make some when it gets closer to Christmas, to sprinkle on top of cookies/roll cookies in, which is what the vanilla sugar is for as well.

So then I thought about it some more and realized I can really flavor sugar with a lot of things. Any spice that I can find whole and dry, right? And I THINK I've heard something about lemon and orange sugar, using the rinds...I'm going to look into all that, because I can't think of what particularly I would actually want to flavor my sugar with, but I love flavored sugar.

Also, been enjoying Ghost Adventures a lot lately. Until like five seconds ago when they showed an actual photograph of a dead horse. Like, died in the dessert, mummified horse. As scared as I am of living horses, dead ones are EVEN WORSE. I have a hard time registering them as actually dead for some reason, so I have the impression that the eyeless, dried-out body is just going to get up and come after me ;n;

P.S. )
potato_head: (snail trail)
Alright so none of you guys replied to my last post so I took that as a "WE DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR UGLY MUG IN VIDEO, UGH"

J/K I'll prolly just do a video next time 8D but I didn't want to bother getting dressed after I showered and since nobody specifically asked I was like LOL PJ BAKING and there's no way I'm filming myself in my PJs. I did skype with Amanda while I baked though and from her responses I am p sure my antics are amusing, so you can all be sure of a video eventually. I am easy to convince of my own ability to be amusing.

ANYWAYS I have photos though and everything HERE WE GO )

Now, I just hope they last until Saturday, so my grandparents can get some. Maybe I'll also make more, smaller cookies next time...they're kind of, um, huge.

I'm making another batch next week, since I have all the stuff for them already, and offered to ship some to a couple of people. I'm also hoping to get my cookie cutters soon :D I wonder if sugar cookies could be made into snickerdoodles if the cinnamon is mixed into them, and then I could have shaped snickerdoodles? Perhaps cinnamon sugar should also be sprinkled on top...for the crunch.
potato_head: (kitty lick)
So guys I'm at work right now but when I get home I'm gonna make the snickerdoodles. So I was wondering if there would be any interest in me taking some videos of me baking? I am a super baby baker (i.e. inexperienced) so it probably won't be very instructional, but it could be amusing :D

ETA did I just use the same icon three posts in a row?! What is wrong with meeee
potato_head: (beautiful mess)
Sooo I ended up staying up all night last night, although I didn't mean to. Still working around the jet lag.

This morning I decided to make snickerdoodles (going to the grocery store with dad later to get ingredients). Then I decided I needed some cookie cutters for Halloween, and instead of waiting for them to show up in Walmart, I decided to find somewhere to buy them online.

I ended up buying 36 cookie cutters. From here. You have to understand, though. They have a snail cookie cutter.

Full list of the shapes I bought:

Dog bone (they had like five choices, I picked the best one), palm tree, terrier dog (they had a lot of dog shapes...), holly leaf, heart double (it's two hearts connected), turkey, bunny rabbit jumping, ghost, owl, bat, lion, elephant, alligator, cat face, shark, spider, paw print, baby rattle, pumpkin, dinosaur set (including pterosaur, tyrannosaurus, velociraptor, stegosaurus, triceratops, and apatosaurus*), sea turtle, donkey, chick in egg (like, hatching), baby bottle, snail, bunny face, cozy cat (it's like curled up, they had a bunch of realistic cat poses), duckling, tombstone, mermaid, kitten (just another cat pose), fleur d lis, lab black (they also had 'lab chocolate' but they were the same shape, just painted different colors, so I picked the less expensive, lol), snake, flag, skull

The only of my favorite animals they don't have are vultures and slugs. And I'm surprised they even had snails, so. Also, they were all out of reindeer, even though they had two or three different reindeer cutters listed :C I'll probably go back closer to Christmas.

I'll need a box now, to keep these all organized.

Soo the current plan is, after supper, go to the grocery store for snickerdoodle supplies, and maybe supplies to bake dog biscuits for Tripper? I'm having trouble finding a recipe that sounds healthy. Dog biscuits do not need sugar, people. Any recommendations?

Anyways, after that, we're going to see the last Harry Potter movie, finally :D

Tripper threw up earlier...he always looks so ashamed after :C and sad. Poor bb. He used to just wander around confused and end up throwing up on the carpet, but he tries to get outside now. I doubt he understands why, but he knows we put him out there when he's getting sick. He's so smart :D

And yes, he gets sick a bit too often. Probably because he eats things like tin foil. For awhile he developed a habit of eating candies despite the fact that they were in wrappers, we had to throw them all out because he got them wherever we hid them. kfjldsakfjaljfa piggy

Went to the grocery store with dad! Got all necessary baking materials! Hooray! Dad made car noises while pushing the cart, and old-fashioned video game noises when putting things in the cart. This is why I like shopping with him.

Also, just now I was wrestling with Tripper, and he apparently figured out a trick to play on me, lmfao. He had started getting tired, so I made kissy noises at him, and he put his head down...and then when I moved in to kiss him, he licked my mouth. He seemed very pleased with himself after, and did it three more times :P little rotter. Right now he's wandering between the living room and the family room, since I'm in one and mom and dad are in the other, and he wants to be with all of us. Baww.

Anyways, baking later! Will take photos!

ALSO found my binder! It was indeed in the laundry.

ETA: BAKING RIGHT NOW. Just got attacked by an egg. Drop of yolk flew up in the air and landed on the back of my hand. SHIT JUST GOT REAL.

ETA2:
[02:20] Me: ((ONO MY MIXING BOWL IS NOT BIG ENOUGH))
[02:20] Me: ((COCOA POWDER GOIN EVERYWHERE))
[02:20] Amanda: ((HOMG NOOOO))
[02:20] Me: ((WUT DO I DO O n O))
[02:20] Amanda: ((TURN IT OFFFFFF))

FOR THE RECORD I had already turned it off. And a solution has been found.

ETA 3: All done with tonight's baking! Which didn't really involve any baking actually. I made the chocolate sugar cookies dough and put it in the fridge to chill, hoping that will make it more docile. It was a BEAST. From right before I wrestled it into a ziplock bag:

[02:35] Me: ((i would describe hte consistancy as 'stubborn as a motherfucker'))

I've coated a bunch of vanilla wafers in milk chocolate and colored white chocolate (pink and green). As I was getting ready to put the milk chocolate ones away, I had the two containers of finished pink and green next to me, and the cat was eating (I had just let her out of the basement - dad accidentally shut her in, AGAIN.) She was interested in what I was doing, as always, so I let her sniff the two full containers since they were closed. Her verdict? She spit a chunk of catfood on them.

IDK what that means, does anybody speak Cat, specifically the Evil Fucking Cat Demon dialect?

Anyways, tomorrow issss rolling, cutting and baking the cookies in the morning, decorating them with eggs at night after Paige gets back from her third day of Anime Boston.

:C

My week has been kind of crap, being as I somehow managed to leave my binder at home. So I'm Booby McBooberson's* this week.

I actually don't even know where it went. Because I know I didn't wear it on Thursday, because I decided to minimize clothing items due to my back hurting. I thought I left it here. But I must have put it in my hamper and it's still in the laundry.

But mom was able to find some colored white chocolate. She insists it's not candy melts, but already-colored white chocolate. She saw it at the dollar store. I asked her to pick me up some, so hopefully I'll be able to do my white-chocolate wafers/shortbread cookies as planned! I'm all excited for baking this weekend. I'll take a gazillion pictures. My plan is to do a collection of wafers dipped in different colors of white chocolate, and some shortbread cookies dipped in milk chocolate.

*This apostrophe snuck in because I just spent the last two hours editing the written part of a joint project for a business class. The business we're doing it on is called 'Cupcake Charlie's'. I have never seen so many apostrophes in my life.

D:

So uh...my roommate is sick. She has therefor asked me to not be in the room unless I'm sleeping, because she wants the light off and apparently even a computer screen bothers her. Okay, sure, we have a suite common room for that after all.

Only, I hadn't realized until now that...one of the girls in the other room in our suite seems to have moved out. And the remaining girl has pretty much let her boyfriend move in. And they have sex frequently. Loud enough to be heard from the common room (but apparently not from our room thanks to cement walls). HELLO HEADPHONES.

ANYWAYS, in other not-awkward news, next weekend is EASTER WEEKEND. Our family is one of those families that does the easter present thing, which I have only recently learned is apparently not all that common? Anyways it's kind of a big deal for us. So I've decided to bake something, of course. I spent pretty much all day thinking 'what if I added cocoa powder to sugar cookies?!!!' but turns out that those ALREADY EXIST :D so I am totally making them. Probably some regular sugar cookies as well.

I'm not sure if I'll use that royal icing recipe...I already have a similar one that doesn't include egg whites, and I'm kind of, um, wary of making icing with raw egg whites, although I am pretty sure that's standard. The problem is though that the recipe I've used relies entirely on confectioner's sugar to make it thick and white and therefor be able to be colored vibrantly, and although it went fine on regular sugar cookies, I'm not sure the colors will look good at all on a darker cookie. IDK GUYS IDK I will probably end up doing this egg white one. Also will let everybody decorate their cookies, on top of decorating eggs. Because this isn't exactly Christmas, it's not like we're giving these cookies to other people like we did at Christmas.

Anyways the other thing I want to do is buy some like, animal crackers or vanilla wafers or something cheap, and dip them in chocolate. Since I am no longer afraid of melting chocolate. I think I'll actually do colored white chocolate, like actual animal crackers do a lot (do they use food coloring for that? I assume so...or do you have to buy special colored white chocolate? I can probably look this up.)

OKAY I just looked it up and apparently there are these special oils and candy colors for coloring white chocolate, BUT you can also use food coloring as long as you mix it in really well. Alright! I'll look and see if I can get these candy coloring things at the grocery store, but I doubt it, they barely even carry food coloring (seriously, they carry like one pack of four colors, it's pitiful). Maybe they'll have them at Michael's...? They do have that little baking section...and JoAnne's also has a baking section that is pretty impressive and I just found the other day...there are no like, baking specialty stores around here :C

Anyways yeah THAT'S MY WEEKEND. I also bought some things on Amazon (all with amex points! Yay!) that I hope will get there this weekend. Some books (a few classics I haven't read yet, and Jennifer Government because I love dystopian fiction, although I was a bit concerned by the fact that there are tons on Amazon used for pretty much $4.00, lol) and a simulation computer game, Black and White 2, since I tried the demo and it's pretty addictive. Like, I want to go play the demo AGAIN even though I've already played it through and know I'll mostly just be frustrated because it's 75% tutorial.

Whatever GOING TO GO PLAY IT AGAIN.
